Get one where you can get warranty service just about anywhere. Make sure you have AT LEAST the CCA's required for your car. I do Sears most often just because they have many locations and they have a policy to rush you through on warranty service.
You got 7 years out of a battery from Auto Zone? Good on ya. I had one that was the bigges piece of crap I've ever had to use. About 6 months after installation the veh wouldn't start--corroded terminals. Man, I couldn't keep those @#$$ terminals clean. Every 2-3 weeks I'd have to pull them and clean them off or else I'd go out to the veh and it wouldn't start. Yes I tried various protection methods/chemicals to keep it from happening. Finally just before I left for overseas once, it died the day I was driving it to storage. Had my friend pull the sob out and put in one from Sears just before I returned.
I do NOT miss that friggin POS battery. And I won't buy another from Oughto-Haveknown
I always buy Duralast Gold when I need a new battery. I only need a new battery when I get a different car that doesn't have a Duralast Gold. As for Optimas, there are two different Optimas. A cheap one and a good one. Consumer Reports is a waste.
I bet your employee discount is about the same as Home Depot.
BTW, who are your company's competition? I thought there where 3 major companies that made all the lead acid batteries for the world.
Not too sure just how good the discount is, but I'd pay about $40 for a red top Optima and $50 for a yellow top. All lead-acid's are $25. I guess you can call that a pretty good discount.
As for the compitition, I'm honestly not too sure. I work in a different division. As I understand it, we manufacturer 95% of all lead-acid batteries produced in the world. I guess with 147,000 employees, it's tough for to know what everyone elses challenges are!
BTW, Johnson Controls sponsors a Corvette race team in Europe. I guess we should support those who support us!
