Default SES, Converter or ???

91 L98 manual 135,000 miles. Engine has had a rough idle for 3 months and balks around 1,000 rpm. 3 days ago I took car out for first time in 2 weeks. Drove 20 miles on interstate, 70 mph, stopped at Dunkin Donuts. When leaving engine "chugged" whenever i accelerated. SES light turned on. I became concerned and stopped at rest stop, shut engine off, walked around car, car would not start. 1 hour later car started as if nothing was wrong. Drove car another 35 miles with SES turning on after about 25 miles, stopped, shut engine off and same experience happened. Drove home and same experience again. Mechanic thinks catalytic converter maybe clogged and says there is a low "clanging noise. Contra indications about converter: no smell, no blue smoke. Any diagnostic suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
