Searched thru alot of the threads, good info out there. I read somewhere but can't find it now, is the 194 bulb a better replacement for the 882. Is it better to stay with the original 882 and are the 882 available at parts stores. I haven;t opened up my dash in the 85, but can someone tell me how many bulbs are needed to replace all the dash, only have one side out, but while its apart rather change them all out. Also, what bulb is used for the turn signals, one of those was out when I got the car.

Thanks for the info
first of all, i don't think you can subsitute the 194's for the 882's the 194's have a different base mount - T10 vs. t2-1/4. 194's are used for the array of "idiot" lights, misc dash lights, etc. 882's have a 2-pin mount. on my 85, i replaced my 882's with these -
cheaper, longer life, and absolutly no difference in brightness, etc, etc, etc. BTW, you need 4, and while you're at, change all 4. not sure what the turn signals are -
I did it when I first got my 85, they are all the same bulb, you can access them from the front, just pull a little plastic panel off and get some tweezers. Fun Fun.
I do this all the time with-out removing the cluster itself. Just remove the round silver things you see in the front around the gauge face... they are actually reflector surfaces don't get them dirty or bent. Use medium 8" straight hemostats to pull the bulbs straight out of bases then to install the new bulbs the same way. DO NOT TOUCH the bulbs with bare hands or with any-thing that may have oil or grease on it. Best to hold the bulbs with paper towel and keep wrapped in paper towel durring install. Oil shortens bulb life to almost nada. So wipe with a bit of paper towel held in the hemostats after install to make sure also. pop the silver cover back on. Go to next...it gets easier after 2 or 3.
Hemostats are smaller locking pliers...Once you have a pair you will find 100s of uses for them.
Sorry that this is the quickest link i could find to a picture of them; http://cgi.ebay.com/8-inch-Straight-...QQcmdZViewItem
Well I went to the dealer on the way home last night to pick up the bulbs.... I should have relied more on the info from this site than the tech at the dealer with all his fancy books . He swore up and down that the 882s were only used inthe 84 model and my 85 was all 74 bulbs and sold me all 74 bulbs. Of course I got home and the 74s only fit my turns which I replaced and found I can order the 882s at the local Advance Auto Parts and will have tomorrw. But I am driving around with my dash panel all off today waiting.
Oh and I do have a set of the surgical clamps that I used to pull my bulbs. Had them for years and yes, they do come in handy for numberous jobs.
