There is a popular thrans builder on the East coast that absolutely hates the transgo stuff and swears it tears up transmissions. I will run the nutz off mine at the strip for a year or 2 and tear it down for inspection.
This is my first auto setup in a lot of years. I've run tons of boosted 5spd and 4spd powered fbody's, tried a ton of different types of clutches, etc. But auto's were new. As a newbie, I just asked around, and everyone said transgo. Install didn't seem too hard, and it shifts so I guess I did ok. Like you, i'll report my findings. If it blows up, I'll probably sell the torque converter and just put a stick in it. I kinda want to try a T5 in a C4.. Especially after getting flamed and told it was a dumb idea..

Btw, I changed that D36 pinion seal with a new GM one. I think it's still leaking. The yoke seemed fine too, no buurs.. So I don't know why its leaking...

The TCI kit I put in shifts pretty normal for firmness at light throttle but really shifts hard at WOT. I'm pleased with it. I thought of getting the Transgo kit but the result seems to me to be similar for 1/4 of the cost. I think I only put $25 into the kit.

Transgo has an edge.
It contains the high rev piston return springs and the teflon coated tv valve assembly. Neither of these 2 sub kits contribute to shift quality, but to overall durability. Because of the contents of the kit, Transgo is priced higher, but is clearly(in my eyes) the better bargain. You recieve 3 times the product at only double the price. If transgo jumped the price up $50, I still think it would be better spent coin.

I intend to use the money to rebuild the trans. It has 100K miles on it and sees a lot of track use. To me it didn't seem a good idea to spend a lot on it if the trans will fail soon.

You are right. At $25, you cannot beat it. A buddy has the tci kit in an f-body and loves it.

If it lives another season I suppose I should get a new seperator plate. The kit didn't come with one and there is some wear at the check ball holes. Pete, what will happen if those check ball holes get to worn? They are wearing into an oval shape instead of a circle. Also, do you think changing the ATF once a season would be to much? I do some road racing and drag racing.

When I was running my car hard, I did a fluid and filter change once a year and midway through the season, I did a fluid change only. Once a year is fine. Worn holes alow for fluid leakage . An aftermarket plate is $20 and it is money well spent. Most of the c4 plates have been discontinued. 85-88 positively has been dropped.

OK, thanks Pete! For next winters maintence I'll do filter and plate then. Where would be a good place for an '88 aftermarket seperator plate? I found a TV cable seal fine, it is AC Delco part # 25518260 and was used for many different cars and trans.

I had a TransGo kit put in last fall. I did the stage 2 and I really like it. I didn't put it in myself, I have a friend that has been doing trans. work since we were in high school so I felt comfortable with him doing the work. He charged me $100 plus the cost of a new filter, plate, and new fluid. He said he had never had a 700r shift so well and was going to put one in his Z28.

TransGo has the separator plate for all years of the 700R4, same for the 4L60E.
