I posted this in the audio section but got no response, I know some of you have done this
can you just make a top for the rear storage compartment and install a sub in it or do you need to make a box for it? 1993 coupe
did a search but all the pictures are no longer there.

The storage compartment fiberglass is really thin.
If you make a box, it's a very bizarre shape. I made one with 3/4" mdf that fills out the front part of the compartment too where it goes behind the seat. You sort of have to drop it in and rotate it into place to use that space. Sorry I don't have pics of the completed box before I installed it. Forum member deiaggie was making boxes awhile back, not sure if he still has any.
I am considering strengthening the stock fiberglass shell underneath and removing the box altogether though... the box-in-a-box is nicely sealed, but sucks for volume
This is the underside (old pic)
This is one I saw at the Ecklers Reunion last weekend:
adi4 - I see you have a cover over everything. What does it look like over the sub? Is it just fabric so the sound can get out? is there anything strengthening the lid over the speaker itself so you can still put junk on top of it? I really like the way that looks covered up.
C4DC - I like the fact that you made your speaker box separate from the rest of the deck you built. I left mine all one piece and its a major PITA to pull out to work on it... I am going to go back and saw it in half now like yours is... thanks for the idea!
when i had a system, i said screw it and built a box to take up all of the hatch area and it housed 2 JL12W0's powered by a Kicker ZR360 wired down to 2ohm bridged...it benched better than 500watts in this configuration and those little 12's loved it...loud as hell...
then i stripped it out and sold it...who needs tunes when the exhaust sounds that good?
eh, exhaust tone gets annoying after a while... at least on long drives.
Sorry, gator, I haven't been over to audio in a couple of days. It can go for days and days without much happening...
I did a box for my rear bin. I am going to redo it, too... it's half above and half below.
Another option is a pair of 8s, mounted in the rear speaker enclosures. From what we have determined, it's a solid .4CF, and something like JL Audio 8W3v2's will fit perfectly. A forum member did this, but his pictures just went away. I need to get up with him on that.
Take a look at the C4 Audio FAQ. It has some other details.
If you car has ABS, you can't have the 2nd sub behind the driver. I used a woofer and amp desinged for low volume enclosures. It sounds better, but nothing like a full system.

That one was an older model (87 I think? I forgot). but it did not have the ABS system obviously.
i would suggest getting some fiberglass resin and mat and making the stock glass thicker then adding a 23/4 baffle on top to seal off the area. this will net you MUCH better air space and give you better woofer/power options. i was thinking about doing this to my 90 but since i just stripped it fro less lbs that don't make much since
I kept all of my storage and put 8's in the stock rear enclosures. Enough base for me and didn't sacrifice the loss of the beer cooler, I mean storage compartment.

I've done that too, isn't that why there's a drain plug? Good hiding place. If they started selling Vodka in serving size containers, I wouldn't have to carry open bottles in the car.

I can't drink a handle all by myself.
Thats why they make flask sized bottles and those cool $1 ice packs. Rubberband the ice pack to the bottle and toss it in the storage tray over the ABS and you still have plenty of room for a sub on the other side
.... not that I've ever done that or anything before
