Default LT1 Starter Help

Guys,
I have a 92 LT1 ZF with an occsional no start , heavy click at the starter motor , all connections have been cleaned and tightened. New battery installed.

This problem has been around for a while , mostly in colder weather but now its more frequent.

Today it took about 15 times cycling the ignition switch to get it started. Everthing else is working just the big click at the starter.

What gear reduction starter motors are you guys using to replace the OEM unit.

I guess what I'm asking is will any mini style gear reduction starter work on an LT1?

thanks Desert

You have either:

1. A starter solenoid in which the contacts that make connection to feed current from the battery cable to the starter motor have gotten burned/pitted/etc from years of arcing.

2. A starter motor with a commutator and/or brushes that are done.

My money is on the solenoid contacts.

Be well,

SJW

And you can buy the solenoid assembly seperate from the starter motor, too.

with the solenoid being defective. Every time I changed one, the automotive angles never smiled on me. I always ended up changing the starter motor in the near future.

So I don't fool around any more, I always change the whole starter and be done with it. But that's just me, maybe you will have better luck.

I'm not aware of a source for a solenoid only (without starter) for the LT1. If such a source exists, I'd be very interested in knowing about it.

To the OP of this thread: Consider removing your starter and carrying it to a local starter rebuilder and having them refurb it for you. It'll likely be less expensive than a replacement starter, and you won't have to worry about shimming, etc, as you'll be reinstalling the same motor you took off the car.

Be well,

SJW
