My 86 shows two versions of steering rack (standard and heavy duty). I was told that one is 2 revs (hard stop to hard stop) and the other is 2.3 revs...which is which?
on these years, generally, if your car has the Z51 suspension, you got the quick ratio rack (2.0 turns), and base suspensions got the slower ratio rack.
there are two letter codes on the pinion cover that tell wich rack is which...
You should go for the Z51 rack unless you are wanting to keep the car original. There really isnt anything "heavy duty" about it, but thats how most Z51 vs. Non-Z51 parts are differentiated in the parts stores.
And before you ask, there isnt anything else that has to be changed, you dont have to upgrade the rest of the suspension to Z51 if you dont want to.
The quick ratio steering is also on Z52 cars. The codes are on the sticker under the glovebox lid on an 87. The car has the quick ratio if it has Bilstein shocks. They were part of the package along with the big sway bars.
