Default What's a good cam for my set-up (l98)

Decided to build an engine and am stuck on the cam. I'm going to use the TPI so I need the power to be made in lower RPM's. Cars and 85 auto with the 3.07 gears. Is a weekend driver that I don't race but like to have fun with.

What I'm looking at:
* L-98 replacment block
* Edelbrock E-tec heads (200cc intake, vortec style)
* edelbrock highflow base and runners
* ported plenum and 52mm TB
* long tube headers and catback exhaust

Sticking with the TPI as I want it to look close to stock.

Any idea on what kind of power I can expect from this combo?

I had a similar combination with a L-98, ZZ-9 cam (212/226 .520/520 lift on 112 CL) Trick flow 195 heads, edelbrock intake, Long tube headers, and cat back exhaust, 52mm throttle body, and TPIS large tube runners. My car was an automatic and it made 276 RWHP and 350 RWTQ and ran 12.69 at 107MPH with this configuration. My guess at engine HP is 340HP to 350 HP.

I've been very pleased with my LPE 211/219 Cam. I have about .530 / .560 lift with 1.6 rockers. Great street manners...most people can't even tell it isn't stock til they line up next to me.

if you are planning to stick with a flat tappet cam, i highly recomend the Crane Energizer 216/216 dur. @ .050", .454/.454" lift.

the E-Tec 200`s have exceptional exhaust side flow, so a single pattern cam will work well for you.

that cam is the same one i used in my 86 to get the track times listed below... dont let the conservative lift figures fool you. this cam works well, and still has a good idle. most people who heard my car still thought i had a stock cam... yet it pulled well to at least 6400 rpm. with my Miniram, yet had tons of low and mid range power...

this cam out performed a couple of bigger cams i tried...

I would only be concerned about the intakes @ 200cc due to the loss in velocity of the air charge. You may loose some bottom end. You may want to consider a smaller cc intake head. I would go with 180s - 195 max for street use and a auto trans. Just my opinion.

Even though I run a 383 (XFire) I use TrickFlow 195s and I have a buddy of mine that has a 383 as well and there is not much difference between our motors - they are almost identical. He used 180 cc Dart Pros. Anyway he has much more bottom end than I do but I have more mid range and top end. Talk to a builder and get their recommendation. Bigger is not always better.

Yes, I'm upgrading to a roller block and looking to go with 1.6 roller rockers as well.

I appreciate the advise. First engine build and I want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Accel 211, TPiS ZZ9 would both work very well with TPI setups.

However the head size you are going to use is too big for a 350 TPI, these really dont need much more than 170-180cc.

Surprisingly the larger "high tech" cylinder heads have pretty good velocity as technology has progressed pretty quick the last 5-10 years.
If it were me though (especially if using a TPI intake) Id use the 170 cylinder head.
