That's not a crosssection, it's simply cut in half. Cut an orange in half and then tell me the pulp on either half is in a seperate chamber.
In the picture it looks more like true duel to me. It goes straight through and in no way crosses over. Doesn't an x-pipe mean the pipes will cross? IMO it is to keep noise lower in the car and that's why it is placed where it is. Listen to the stock exhaust on the early C4 compared to the LTx. The early cars tone is a lot different. Can anyone that has owned both compare the sound inside? It was probably all in trying to make a more civilized and worldly car. Like Porsche. There were so many complaints of the early C4. Please if my opinions sound way off, bash me nicely.
From what I see in the picture the resonator is a MIXING chamber. Call it what you will X-H-R?. The resonator in the picture allows both banks of cylinders to mix. When I think of TRUE dual, I think of a system that has 1 tailpipe for the left bank and 1 for the right bank, NO mixing of the exhaust gases between the right and left bank of cylinders.
wow i didnt think alot of people would post replys to this lol...well i like how everyone is saying something....so pretty much what i would like to kno is...if i go "true dual"..will i loose power?

You might want to listen to nobody until someone who's actually done this or similar has something to say and can back it up with timeslips or dyno pulls. Any gain or loss to be had here is going to be relatively small, so no seat-of-the-pants test is going to tell you anything, especially when the exhaust tone is changing too.
I have a 1995 vette so I am interested in this discussion. From what I see in the picture there are 2 horizontal lines right through the middle of the resonator. If one was to mirror this image and weld it back to the original image, it would be two separate chambers. Is that correct?
(and when I mean weld it back - both of those horizontal lines will be welded separately)

Doesnt matter, wherever the exhaust gases meet they are going to equalize themselves just from exhaust pressures alone. The engine is going to pump it all out in the end anyway. The X may cause a little less turbulence depending but IMO the difference is too small if any to worry about.

im running 1/3/4 dimameter " long tube headers, then high flow small cats,then 2.5 " mandrel pipe into x-pipe cross over thru to true duel 2.5" stainless pipes all the way thru too magna flow rear mufflers with lt1 tips!
sounds like a charm,goes like a charm!
it is ideal to run x-pipe and duel system togeather as the x-pipe acts as a balancer and provides better scavenging of the air !!!
i cant do much better besides going larger diameter to 2.75" but really 2.5 " is all you need !

NO! It's one, single, uno, chamber cut in half. If I were to cut your leg off at the knee cap and lay it next to you, that doesn't mean you'd have three legs.

This is funny. So there are two such resonators on the car? That means it's true dual with no cross over at all and an X or H pipe would help. Right?

bad analogy, because quantitatively, yes.... you would now have 3 legs. Your performance however, would take a tremendous hit!
OK, I just swiped this pic from another thread showing this type of resonator and the white line shows the cut angle of the rusty old chamber that was cut in half.. so the exhaust from each bank DO "mix" like CC has been trying to explain.
