The factory service manual says that special tool J39194-B is needed to remove a heated oxygen sensor. The tool looks like a line or flared wrench to me. Is there a generic tool available at Sears or anywhere else? Please be as specific as possible regarding which wrench to use.
The manual also says that it's difficult to remove the sensor unless it's warm, and that there is a danger of stripping the threads if excessive force is used. It says nothing about removing the heat shield, but a 'search' says that it may be necessary. Any advice as to step-by-step instructions would be appreciated.
I would really hate myself if I have to go to the shop for a H2OS replacement, as it looks so simple. I've had my car for some time now, and if I cannot manage to do a repair like this, then maybe it's time to go to a generation with a warranty and let a real diy'er take over. I know that I wouldn't feel the same about any other gen.
I just use a open end wrench I don't have any shield, so no comment there.
If it has been on there a long time, it is helpful to attempt it warm, but a generic oxygen sensor socket works fine. They cost about $6 from your local parts store.
There is a special 22mm oxygen sensor wrench made for LT1 cars which makes the job a lot easier. I'm sure you could get to it with other tools but the proper one makes it a lot easier to get a torque wrench on the new one if you are inclined to do that.

This tool looks nice.
I have a 94 and the oil pan doesn't allow enough room to get a real wrench on it. I bought a stubby 7/8 and while I could it on the sensor I couldn't get enough leverage to loosen it. A set of crows foot wrenches with the 7/8 included for $15 at Autozone was the secret. I only changed the passenger side as there was a broken pin on that one. The driver side looked a little tougher as a heat shield looked to be in the way.
