Just took a couple of passes down the local 1/8th mile track and noticed the trans shifts too late and much higher than usual. Normally the trans will shift at 5500 or even 5600 but after the first run, it now starting to shift at 6100 on the 1-2 shift. Instead of the usually firm shift, it sounded like it "slip shifted" to 2nd gear. That kinda worries me a bit... The 2-3 shift is still the same, about 5300 to 5400. I ended up running pretty crappy ETs today, much crappier than my last visit to the track. Must have been either the trans problem or just very bad air. Well, at least it was fun but it was rather humbling running 8.0x instead of the usual 7.60s. Traps were also quite lower. The 90-91 traps made me feel like something is wrong. I'm the last few times I ran it, the car was trapping in the 93-94 mph....
Hope pete chime in, but in the meanwhile u might re-check with TV cable adjustment. Recently i installed 58mm TB and than i did not and forgot to readjust TV cable and took for a ride, i say holy this 58mm TB is good, this is SOTP feel. But later i found i forgot to adjust TV cable huh.
Well I've heard that the 1-2 clutch pack might be going. At least that is what a mechanic friend told me... Trans fluid is brownish looking instead of red...... And other opinions?
Sounds like you are putting a lot more power through driveline components which are not designed to handle it...happens all the time...now that you have built a real strong heads and cam stroker you will need to beef up the drive train...tranny now and diff shortly...I just told a friend of mine this exact same thing.....
No disrespect but you just can't expect a stock tranny, converter and diff to handle all the extra power...best of luck...
yep, new fluid, filter, tranny cooler (xtends life a little) see if you can keep the fluid temp down as much as possible (biggest killer) i too am building a 406 killer hp motor, but will beef up the tranny as much as possible till it BLOWS then replace it, LOL
plus with a daily driver its reeeeaaalll nice to have an overdrive tranny
but if your pumping huge HP and drag racing, i think a TH400 is in order, (or go standard) but search out Pete K, he is the tranny Guru!!
he also can get you hooked up with HD parts cheap and reliably!!
