Right side headlight does not rotate........but light comes on. I have read about a manual **** to open headlight, but can't seem to find it? There is a small **** at the bottom and when I turn it, it acts like a motor is trying to turn? Not sure what it does?
Anyone have a picture of this manual opening ****? I don't know if the gears are bad or the motor, and since the headlight door is down, I wanted to check if it would rotate in that direction when opened manually. My thinking (?) is possibly a relay.
if they work the same as the 86 lights you have to unplug the wire harness for the motor and then turn the manual ****. if you turn the **** while it's plugged in the motor will fight the turning.
A couple of hints:
1. Home Depot, Ace, True Value and Lowes all carry bushings that fit (diameter = .49" X length = .43" or 27/64 x 29/64) , are a lot cheaper and you can get them right away without waiting for UPS, FedEx, or the mail.
2. Disassemble the unit on a towel. The little parts have a tendency to roll around and end up on the floor.
3. The "split or roll pins" holding the shaft will most likely break in half when they are removed. I used an appropriate sized cotter pin as a replacement. Easier to remove in the future and they don't shatter.
4. A Home Depot part that will work with a little discreet shaving with a sharp knife is: Spacer 1/2" long x 1/2" OD x 194" ID
Part # 30699 87228

I used the **** just recently when installing new headlights and aligning doors. I didn't have to crank them all the way, but I did with all connections intact and no restriction when cranking. http://members.shaw.ca/dankai/Headlight%20Doors.pdf
I had the same problem on my 86. I could rotate the manual **** while the headlights were on. Had no problem with the motor "fighting" me...at all. I would start with the relays myself, but that's me. I used my FSM to troubleshoot the headlight system and found out that I had a bad relay. There are three located on the frame in the left side headlight bay. They should be covered with a black plastic cover.
The link AGENT 86 posted is exactly what you need to figure out the problem. I would print it out and use it.
What if the light comes on and there is no noise and no rotation? Check relay and check weather pack for power. Then what? Motor shot? Or could it just be bound gears. Remember . No noise.
I am fighting this right now myself on the 87 coupe LH side. Checked all the relays first and they were fine, removed the motor, disassembled and the gears and the black inserts are fine, the black inserts show a little wear but the gears are near perfect. I reversed their placement so it put new to where the light and door assembly meet on the plate. When I put it back together it would attempt to turn but not turn all the way. It was acting like it was binding somewhere. After fooling with the door and assembly alignment it decided to start working again. I remember reading on one of the posts on here about a possibility of a misaligned door assembly. I have noticed the unit tries to twist when it starts to turn. It just seems to be a matter of trying and readjusting until you get it back in the correct alignment.
While I had the motor out and disassembled I took some emery paper and cleaned all the contacts on the base of the armature, this seemed to help the most to get the motor back into operation. Before I took it apart I turned the manual **** and didn’t have any resistance with the motor. Before I reinstalled the motor I tested it by plugging it in and the motor was running fine. You’ll notice when doing this the motor keeps turning. When you reassemble the unit it will put a load on the door and light and stop the motor from spinning and not turn until you pull the light switch ****. (not sure I described this correctly but if you try it you’ll see what I mean)
This is where I am now on repairing mine hope this will somewhat help you as well when all the electrical seems to be fine.
So far.....so good. Managed to get the motor out. Lot different then the post for how to remove the earlier models. None of the wiring diagrams match the color wires I have ( Green with thin white stripe) ( White with thin green stripe) and (tan wire). Anyone know if you can apply voltage to these wires and check the motor? So far, I tried and nothing turns so I am assuming the motor is worn out.
