Well, are you sure the shorties will "meet" up (align) with the the Y pipe??? Alot of them are block huggers and the downward angle is different from the stock headers. If you keep them, get them coated.
coated would be good, if you wrap em, you can spray some stuff on em to keep em from rotting and rusting, it cuts down on heat also, if you go that route, just keep an eye on em and dont let em rust out.
but they ARE "BETTER " than the stock manifolds. then sell em when you save up for the long tubes........
And they are not 'block hugger' shorties. They just happen to resemble them.
I just installed stainless steel SLP shortie set from a '91 onto my '95. Fit perfect, no issues. I got them used for $140.00. (In perfect condition, btw)
I've not experienced ANY power improvement, nor did I expect to. I installed them for looks only. The factory manifolds were butt ugly.
For that kind of cheap, plus a half day of my play time it was well worth it to me, personally.

No Y-Pipe on the LT1. The shortys bolt right to the cats.
