Default Code 36 [MAF Burnoff Relay] Problems...

I have had this code 36 for long enough and need to get rid of it so I can get my inspection sticker. Anyhow, I have gone through the entire code 36 troubleshooting chart in my service manual, and it passes the entire flow chart. I have run the tests about 3 times and come back to "faulty ecm or ecm wiring" every time. Somehow, I find this hard to believe, but maybe I am wrong. Aside from replacing the ecm, does anyone know how I can check the wiring for my MAF burnoff relay signal from the computer? My helms manual doesn't seem to illustrate this.

If the flow chart isn't helping than it's an intermittent.

I had this on a 86 and it turned out to be the relay connector, the pins were spread somewhat and not making good contact. Tweaked them with a screwdriver and scratched the surface corrosion off and fixed the problem.

I was getting that code for a while and I just threw in a new power relay and a new burn-off relay. They're right next to each other and you might as well do them both at the same time. The code went away and it was kind of nice changing out something that only cost about twenty bucks instead of a hundred.

I have to do the same thing every few years!
Just change them both, remove battery cable to reset codes and you should be fine. If the auto parts says they don't have one in stock have them check the fuel pump or wiper relay-usually same part number.

Look at the ECM to engine wiring info. It gives you the pin out info and colours.

I think I'll start by getting some electrical contact cleaner and cleaning all these contacts and will try to get a little screwdriver in there to work on the pins.

My money is on one of the relays. Replace them both, something like $9 a peice at NAPA. I think you'll be happy.

Read your FSM, and think about the Fuel pump relay too. And check the wires going into it.
