Default Tranny cooler lines

I just got done taking the radiator out, considering something aftermarket with better cooling abilities and I also took out the AC condensor.

There is a ton of room up front now, there will be all kinds of airflow on the radiator without that condensor in there.

When the radiator came out the lower tranny cooling line was frozen and had to come out with vice grip pliers. I was wondering if anyone is running an AN line setup for the tranny cooler and if so do you have photos and what are you using? I was also thinking about bypassing the stock cooler in the radiator and buying a heavy duty aftermarket unit to go where the ac condensor was. Then run the AN line to that.

Ran a search for the radiators of choice for high heat applications but did not find much. I saw mostly fan switch questions, and one on a dewitts radiator.

Anyone know an aftermarket company making nice radiators? Maybe a dual pass for an 89 auto.

I used some AN fittings with mine, but didn't feel the need for them everywhere. Here is a picture at the radiator.

I kept the radiator cooler part. The DeWitts radiators are nice.

Here is a picture of the cooler.

What are you doing that needs so much cooling, knowing the plan always helps with recomendations.

High Speed road course plans.

So you are running the radiator tranny cooler and have it branched off to run a seperate unit as well? Where did you pick up the fittings, summit? Also any tools you need to make the connectors work correctly?

Thanks.

Forum member _twisted_ is running an AN line setup with a Dewitt's radiator and an auxillary transmission cooler. The consensus is to run the fluid throught the radiator and the auxillary cooler for the best cooling.

As for the tools, you need a vice with aluminum jaws to not hurt the fittings and the AN wrenches. It was really simple to do and it seems like a great idea especially if your factory lines are in bad shape.

I needed no special tools for my setup, I used my normal wrenches. I did get the fittings from Summit. To use the stock radiator I had to get an inverted flare to AN adapter.

I used the return to the trans. line, at the bottem of the radiator. I screwed in the inverted flare to AN adapter, then screwed an AN to hose barb fitting on. That is the red 90° turn adapter in the picture. I just used hose and hose clamps for the rest then. I didn't see the need to add anything else, it would have just been extra cost, extra weight, and extra hassle. I recommend a cooler with a fan and manual fan switch to run between sessions for extra cooling.

I posted some data here:

Wolf can you try posting your pics. I am to the point of trying to put my rad back in now and need to get those fittings. Do you have a parts list by chance? I want to get the stocker in and get it running, may end up needing a new motor, then i will go back and put in more cooling or swap it out for a dewitts.

I am running a Dewitt radiator to cool the engine and an external B&M supercooler in front of my AC condeser to cool the transmission. I am not using the inside trans passage of the Dewitt to cool the transmission fluid. I am using the external B&M only. It stays cooler using the external only. My coolant temps are always higher the my trans temps.

I am going to be able to mount a large tranny cooler becuase I took all of the ac stuff out so there is tons of room in the nose now.

.....i would (and am getting ready to) install a trannie cooler in my 88...and will install the cooler in the radiator return line (input to the radiator)...my reasoning is that the temps in the radiator may very well be lower then that in the trannie return line (input).......also, if i can get rid of some of the heat of the trannie fluid BEFORE it hits the radiator, the radiator may not have to work as hard to get rid of the btu's already eliminated by the cooler and may result in lower or more stable engine coolant temps and lower trannie temps.....
