Unless you have about $12k to spend. I'd get a 454 and stroke it to a 496. A guy at the shop recently rebuilt his tired old 454 into a healthy 496 for about $3k and change. Its gonna be a very nice torquey off-roading motor in a K5 Blazer.

a late model 8L out of a truck would be nice, especially with the fuel injection setup.
don't forget the C6Z06 7liter complete with drysump oiling, TI connecting rods would fit as well.

Imagine it in a ZR1 chassis.

Or maybe a tall deck LSX block bored and stroked to the max, 512 cubic inches of LSX power.
There's a vid of a 449 c.i. LS2 powered C5 on youtube... 600 rwhp N/A!!!

BBCs fit pretty good in a C4. The bellhousing layout is the same as a SB. The motor mount locations too. There are a couple more similarities. A SB distributor will fit a BB.
Plugs are pretty easy to get to. The back on one the pass side is a pain. Theres some clearance issues around the evap box, depending on the type of headers.
I dont think a tall deck would fit. But that shouldnt be an issue, as you can go as big as 572 or 588 with a big bore aftermarket standard deck block.

A better option would be the SB2 18 degree setup, IMHO

This is true. With the standard head config, you're limiting the output due to nothing more than an airflow issue.

Big Block
Internally balance the engine, you can use a small damper in the front.
I could not find the headers, for the swap. The distributor will be a problem also
