I have an 86 A4 with a busted shifter cable. This is the second time in about six months that it broke. The latest cable simply pulled apart where it was swaged. I suspect that it is a cheap part made in China. The one before that was not swaged but was held together with just a spot weld which broke.
I can get one from the dealer , but will it be better that aftermarket? I don't particularly mind paying nearly twice for it at the dealer as for NAPA, if ,I had some assurance that it would not be so shoddily made. It is not a particularly difficult job to replace it but it requires a lot of dash and console dissasembly, that I would like not to do again soon. Can someone please tell me a source for a better quality cable?
I once had a 1967 LeMans the ground strap was broke on that was going through shifter cables until it was repaired. Newer cars would probably have far more electrical problems in the same situation.
