You need a Torx socket. If I recall correctly, the size is E4.
You can also "borrow" one of the Torx screws from your throttle body, invert it over the screws in the Opti, and twist it with a pair of pliers (obviously, be careful to not damage the threads or break the screw).
If you want the correct torx socket you need a deep E4. Snap On has it and so does Lisle. A regular short E4 will not work. The screw though now there's a neat idea

All this work for a cap and rotor. For about $300 you can get a brand new GM opti with new bearings sensors and all on Ebay. (I know there are many choices and variations but that’s another conversation). The Forum can tell you how to do the job, but don’t know what your original problem is. If you do go for the cap, at least start engine before installing water pump to make sure it runs and see if you possibly cured your problem. Its also a good idea to change both shaft seals for pump and opti.
The other day you had a post asking how to wash the engine. Did you do this and something went wrong, like it doesn’t run now?
no, I'm tring to get to the timing cover, it has and oil leak. just got the cap and rotor, new water pump, new aircompressor ( this is was suppose to be the only thing I was going to change), plugs, wires, timing chain and gears, and valve cover gaskets. I am going to clean the front of the motor just to get some of the oil out of the way. The whole opti was taken out and replaced some time before I got it, I just want to do this just so I don't have to for a long time. thanks for all the replies.
