Ahhhh, here are the two big things that really help bring that quarter mile time down.

I really miss my automatic tranny

What is the octane on the E85 by you? Isn't it something around 110?

The 4L80E is HEAVY compared to the th700r4, but at this power level the 700 is not an option.

E85 is 101-104 Octane RON.

Again man, that is bad ***.

Did the 1985 motors have forged pistons?

Yes, 1984 and 1985 have forged TRW #464664.

This is an old thread, but I see no reson to start a new one. Almost nine years ago that I did my last update. I ran the corvette hard that summer 2008 and also did some more minor modifications. The last one was to try reducing back pressure.

Before, the same used with the turbo also:

And after:

I was going to use full flow mufflers, but I ran out of time.

The next day I was at en event trying out the modification.

Standard tires:

And then with drag radials. First a 454 chevelle SS with manual transmission.

I also ran a blown smallblock rod with half the weight of the corvette and he claimed 400+ hp

And the time for 1/8 mile.
7.1 seconds at 170 km/h (106 mph )

Head gaskets and heads were ok. Only one exhaust valve slightley bent.

All piston heads, ringlands and piston rings were ok. No problem at all visible on the combustion side.

The direct cause was failing rods. Many of them were bent, and that caused the weights on the cranc to hammer on some of the pistons under the wrist pin. as seen on the picture. It is easiest to see on piston 3.

Cap walk was also visible but that was not the cause the sudden mechanical noice.

The camshaft was i seven pieces.

I think that the stock parts did a good job at about four times the stock power.

After this I parked the Corvette and started collecting parts over some years.

An unused Dart Little M block with 4.125" bore.

And one stock 2-bolt mains cap as comparison

That looks like a nice solid block.

I'm also impressed that the stock bottom end held up so well.

Both AFR heads, the Holley Stelath Ram and turbo system could be reused.

I found the Dart block for sale and the prize was right. The owner was planning to build an engine but ended up buying a new complete one.

The next step was to decide what parts to fill the block with.

* I wanted a strong bottom end.
* I din not want to custom make any engine parts.
* Higher RPM and less torque. With the turbo I get as much torque as I want anyway ...
* No overbore on the new block.
* Longer connecting rods.
* Dished pistons for lower compression.

I investigated options to build a 347 CUI using 3.25" stroke ( 327 crank ) or a 372 CUI using 3.48" stroke ( 350 crank ).

I decided on building a 372 CUI because of a more crank and connecting rod options.

If building a 383 CUI you have an almost infinite set of options and kits. For the 372 CUI it is a different story.

This is some of the parts I finally decided on:

Forged steel Lunati Sledgehammer Crankshaft with 3.48" stroke.

Forged SRP Inverted Dome pistons
https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/srp-231319-8
* Dish 16 cc
* Compression Distance 1.125" ( for 6" rods in a 400 CUI )

6.125" Howards Cams Ultimate Duty Forged Billet Connecting Rods
