What years interchange?
Through an act of sheer stupidity :o I have accidentaly destroyed the memcal along with its chip that snaps into the computer on my 87 automatic car. So I need to look for a replacement. Must it be out of an 87 car or is there a year range I can look for that will work?

If you got a "performance" chip on an adapter (like a Hypertech) , you can take any 86-89 memcal.
Without your 87 chip, you won't be able to run 88 and 89 memcals due to VATS issues.
I have an 89 memcal and use it for ECM trials in a friends 86, but we use always his spare chip. Never had a problem during trials. The extra cold start injector seems not to be an issue either.
Here's a list of 87 auto trans memcals:
GM PN 16070729 for the auto trans and a 2.59 rear gear
GM PN 16070737 for the auto trans and a 2.73 rear gear
GM PN 16070733 for the auto trans and a 3.07 rear gear
