do yourself a favour and learn about the search function.

This will turn into a war of words. One I prefer not to instigate or participate in.

The main difference that i've noticed is the where the powerband is.

L98 - all the power is down low, pretty much now power over 4800rpm.
LT1 - more power at higher rpms, keeps pulling hard up to the redline which is about 5500-6000rpm.

Of course thats stock, with mods both can have different characteristics.

Common sense that the newer engine will be better, given that everything (mods) are equal.
BTW, I own an L98.

Generally speaking, LT1.

The L98 has some benefits over the LT1, but unless you're looking for some specific difference, the LT1 is definitely your best bet.

well i suppose it should be kind of cuddly, bit skinny, nice heads with perky little cam followers, obviously big mouth intake, some serious bottom end torque,a hell of a dwell and some serious overlap.

Ive owned both, and i totally with that statement, the LT1 is a better engine in almost every sense of the word.

on this forum that topic goes along with religion and politics in the category of "things that you will never win an argument over..."

both are sick motors, i think one should just pick the car based on miles, look, mods, etc. whatever you want, because i don't know anyone who's been disappointed with either.

Seriously, as time marches on so does technology. The LT1 should be better, but there is nothing wrong with the L98 either.

As others have asked, better at what?
This always turns into one of those "personal opinion" topics

Thanks for the reply's guys. I'm trying to learn more about these cars. I just recently sold my Grand National. Took me years to learn about that one.

I guess " better than what?"

Strength, durability. Which one will like a shot of NOS

Depends on how much money you have to spend. I wanted a C5, but couldn't afford one right now. I then wanted a LT1, but found a L98 convertible for cheap. L98 makes a hell of a street car. If you don't want to redo the bottom end and want to run nitrous, I think the best choice would be an '85 (I think) L98, as they had forged pistons. But the newer L98's have better heads and can handle some nitrous (I run a 125 shot on an '89). I know in my area you can buy a L98 car, mod it to be way faster than an LT1 and have way less money in it than just buying an LT1 car. But if you want more HP with less work/time spent modding then buy an LT1. LT1's are quicker than an L98, stock for stock. Both seem to be very durable engines and can be modded fairly cheaply. Hope this helps some.

Now, stick or auto?

The 84-85 L98 have forged pistons. The 87+ L98s and LT1s have aluminum heads. The LT1 reverse cooling gives it a higher detonation limit. The early motors might be better suited to NOS with the lower stock compression, but then again you'll need a 100 shot just to keep up with a stock LT4.

Can someone please post a side by side pic of the Torque and HP curves of both engines. I know the numbers but I've never seen the graphs next to each other. I like my LT1. LT1's can run N2O too.

Thanks

Yes, the LT4 is the way to go if one can be had in your price range. Better yet, LT5 in a ZR1.

Buy the one you like, best condition, lowest miles, newest year. Unless you have a preference for one year or another. They both are good solid engines, they both have weird little quirks.
