Default "94" 6 speed conversion

Has any one done this conversion?? I was thinking that buying a wrecked 6 speed car would be the best way to do this and get all the parts including the dana 44 rear. Where is a good place to get wrecked corvettes??

CoPart, IAA, and a couple of others sell insurance cars, and of course EBAY. It's very hard to find wreaked 6spds, because there wasn't that many to begin with. If you find one, plan on paying about $3k - $4k. In my opinion it's not worth it. There are people who hae done it, but as the cars get cheaper, it's just easier to buy one.

Thanks for the input, I've been wrestling with this for awile, sounds like good advice, but if I found a car for 3-4 thousand I'd be real tempted as I have a body kit and a one off spoiler and I really like the body I have!!

I converted mine to a 6spd about 2 years ago. I bought a complete 6spd tranny but I still need to get the dana 44 at some point. The swap wasnt all that bad but I did end up having to replace my slave cylinder about 4 times because they were all jacked up from the get go. There is a thread here somewhere talking about how the companies put the seals in backwards on the cylinders causing them to leak after only about 6 months. Anyway I like my 6spd now but I have to get back under there and tighten the C-beam. Then agian I wish that the Keisler kits were for our cars, I think I would go that route if they were.

I believe you would have to change the C-beam AND the driveshaft (and they are very hard to find). Plus, you would not be happy with the performance, especially if you have the standard 2:5x ratio. What makes the 6-spds seem fast is the 3:4x gears. And if it matters, you would be taking a say, $8000 car and turning it into a $4000 car unless everything came out perfect, including the D44. JMO

So was it worth the effort, would you do it again or just buy a 6 speed car?? Where did you get your parts from? How long did it take to do?
Do you think buying a wrecked 6 speed car is a good way to get all the nessesary parts?

It is not a really complex project.

Unbolt auto brake pedal, and clutch and brake pedals bolt right in place.

You need to drill three small holes for the master cylinder, and it bolts right in.

Trans is like installing any manual trans and clutch set up.

You just need to cut a hole for the stick, and make a cover for it.

A few wire rerouting, and it was pretty much it. If you can install a manual transmission, you should be able to handle the project.

The hard part is to collecting all the parts that you need before taking on the project. But, if you can find a doner, it will make it real simple.

The only bad thing to the project is the cost of the Dana 44/ c beam/ driveshaft. You can do a 6 speeed conversion at a pretty reasonable price now day, but when you add the Dana44/ c beam/ driveshaft in the price, it makes it a bit unreasonable,$1500 to $2000 to the price.

If you are interested in doing a conversion, get yourself a parts break down manual first. You can see everything that you will need, and where everything need to go.

Look at my sig. it doesn't say it's a D36, but it is. The only thing you would have to change is the yoke, you would have to use one from a D44!!

IIesg, surely a wrecked Vette would be best, you would have the trani, clutch assembly, driveshaft, C-beam and D44, shift plate, leather boot, shift ****, master and slave cylinders, pedals and floor section (tunnel) !!! Of course I would do it again, it's just a blast shifting up and down whenever I want to. The acceleration is also better, except maybe in 1. gear. You definitely need at least a 3.45 gear, I'm using a 3.54 and will be converting soon to a D44 with 3.90 or 4.10 gears.

Default '95 ZF 6 Speed Conversion

Arnold, I would like to convert my '95 auto to a 6 speed using a ZF from a '94. I bought the ZF several years ago and used it to replaced a 4+3 in an '87 which worked out very well using a good clutch and a aluminum flywheel. After driving the '87 with the 6 speed for less than a year, I was rear ended and the car was totaled by the insurance company. I parted out the body, but saved the drive line including the engine, trans(ZF), front and rear suspension, etc. Did you have to replace the ECM? Did you have to re-route the transmission wireharness for the reverse lights, etc? Any other specific challenges you had to deal with would be good to hear. Regards, Luke

Luke, aren't you the same fellow that wrote me an email a few weeks ago asking me the same question???
1. You do not need a new ECM, matter of fact you don't even need to reprogram it.
2. VSS signal wire will work great, just hook it up. The wires for the reverse switch you will have to route yourself from the auto shifter harness.
3. You will have to put a jumper between two wires or else the engine won't start. As you know the engine will only start in "P" or "N" in an automatic.

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you are in Southern California, a great place for used C4 parts is.

Redline Corvette Parts
1777 Woodlawn G-4
Upland, CA 91786
Office: 909 946-5928
Redliner50@hotmail.com

The business is owned by Pat Rothnie. He buys wrecked C4's and parts them out. A great source for all those hard to find parts like brackets, body panels, interior trim, etc. Also good for mechanical parts, suspension stuff, brakes, and running gear. However engines, especially LT-1's and LT-4's along with 6-speeds, don't last long.

I have bought quite a few parts from him, he has fair prices, plus he is a nice guy.
