I, personally haven't done it, but it certainly can be done. That is why there are parts books and parts lists. Maybe ikrerds doesn't have the expertise or the facilities, but it CAN be done.

RACE ON!!!
Absolutely. I have rebuilt many. Every wear part is available thru gm or the aftermarket.
I assume we are discussing a 1984 Dana 36? If so, there is some misunderstanding here.
I just replaced the rear end in my car. The right main cap was cracked on my 1985 Dana 36 housing, so I found a used Dana 36 out of an 84. (You cannot install new main caps on housings because they are line bored at the factory.)
I purchased a rebuilt positraction ring gear carrier from Ikerds and installed it in the 84 Dana 36 housing along with a Richmond 3.75 ring and pinion.
As far as I know, there is no difference in the 84-85 ring gear positraction carriers, only in the housing, and the carriers will still interchange.
There is a difference in the 2 series (2.73 ratio) and the 3 series (3.08 ratio) carrier to accommodate the thicker ring gear. Most of the aftermarket gear sets are made for the 2 series ring gear carrier.
If you decide to rebuild the carrier yourself, you will need some special tools to spread the clutch plates and install the springs.
The caps, of the carrier and caps (main diff housing) are like the main caps of an engine block. They CAN be replaced, but they have to be custom machined to fit properly and work. Usually it isn't worth the time and trouble.
