Default Front brake caliper install????

Ok, so this may seem to be the dumbest question ever.......:o

Is there a trick to getting the front caliper back into the bracket after installing pads on a 92? I got the new Hawk pads in. Now it seems like the bottom part of the pads, with the holes for the guide pin are to long?! I can't for the life of me get the caliper back in there.

Thanks,
-Rick

I can't picture exactly what you are referring to but I would make sure you have the right pads in the right place. Also make sure they are not upside down or reversed. I remember the last time I did mine that it was very easy to confuse which pads go where and I had them mixed up at first. Also make sure the caliper pistons are fully compressed in before trying to fit the caliper over the rotor. I used the old pads and a screw driver to compress the caliper pistons.

Look at the photo below and find the top tab that I have circled. If you are talking about those holes, they are not used for the pins (or used at all, for that matter). That end of the pad is installed "up" as shown. Once you verify that, insert the top of the pad/caliper assembly into the bracket first and then swing the bottom into place.

The bottom part of the retaining pin "hole" is formed by the slot in the bracket, and the top part by the edges of the pads. It won't be evident until the caliper is fully in place.

Also make sure the anti-rattle clips are oriented properly; if they rotated slightly while you were installing your pads it will lead to the problem you describe.

Ding ding ding......that's it. I have the pads in upside down. D'oh! To make myself seem even more of a dope......I had them in "correctly" the first time...and changed them before trying to put in the caliper!

Thanks guys.

Don't be too hard on yourself. There is a reason I'm so familiar with this now, and it's not because I was particularly smart about fixing my own problem.

It's better that it was this simple, really. Glad to help.
