Default Porting the Heads

Hi

I was told if I take my heads off for any reason my car will start to burn oil. If this is true what can I do to make sure it does not happen?

How does porting the heads figure into this? Also who told you the car will burn oil? There are valve oil seals that you can replace if you are going to remove the valve train.

Leave them on? I was told the moon is made of green cheese. By what logic do you consider that a possibility? It sounds like it is time for some education, so you can do your own thinking.

RACE ON!!!

With the highest level of respect and humility I must inform you that the source of your information was in error and should be taken with a grain of salt as to mechanical issues regarding SBCs or any other internal combustion device in the future.

Respectfully submitted

That makes no sense. Find a new mechanic.

You have I must say, a fine looking Vette. Find a better shop. Your engine will respond to skillfully done mods.

The basic question has been answered now the real question. Why do you want to port the heads? Is this a part of a general upgrade including cam, intake, exhaust(long tube headers) custom cihp and tuning? If the answer to any of these questions is not yes then porting the heads wont gain you many,if any additional horsepower.

Hi

Yes I plan to put the hot cam and 1.6 rockers on the motor in the spring and with any luck longtube headers in a couple weeks.

What do you guys think of a 52mm throttle body as well to complete the package.

Though my car is a LT4 I have the mods you mention that you want. I did add a 52mm TB and the most noticeable thing was my throttle response it's difficult to say if any thing other than that occurred but I can most defiantly attest to a crisper snapper throttle response.
Your wanting to do a lot of stuff to your car make sure who ever dose the work knows what there doing get your self a plan/recipe for your needs or goals. Our cars have unique tuning software for 95&96 Vetts LT1 edit. I would suggest you add this to your list.

Determine the desired duration and choose a cam lobe that gives maximum lift for this duration without exceeding them maximum lift value. (excerpt from Nathan Plemons article)
Can someone please explain that sentence to me? How do you determine the desired duration? Simply by cylinder head efficiency?
Quench area? Compression ratio, naturally. Torque converter and rear axle gear ratio?
It is a wide open statement that, to me, confuses the issue. Any gurus want to chime in please?
I am planning a head and cam swap, after I install the EM headers I just ordered. I am still not sure what EM has to offer as to true duals size, and which mufflers I will run. I also have a TPiS mini-ram that will go on, probably after the head change. (although I have been told the mini-ram will change the characteristics of the stock cam, by advancing it to 10BTDC, instead of the factory setting (which is?) I may put it on at the time I install the headers and true duals.
Which brings up another question. I know there are L98 true duals out there, but on my '89 ragtop, I have to factor in the X-brace. I am thinking 2 & 1/2" from the headers back should fit w/out issues. Melrose makes a nice setup, using 3" around the tranny, into a 3" work of art X-pipe, then Random Tech hi-flow cats, and then it is reduced to 2 & 1/2". I seriously doubt those 3" pipes are going to fit between the floor and X-brace. I am looking for working examples if anyone wants to chime in. Thanks.
