ive got a coolent leak in the back of my motor. as soon as i poor into my reservoir it starts pouring out the back of the motor. just how screwed am i?
Where at the back of the motor? The freeze plugs are on the sides of the Block. If it's coming out up top - towards the distributor, then you need a new intake manifold gasket. The temp you reached may have caused other damage - maybe not. You need to fix where it's leaking and then check compression. AND if it is a freeze plug, then it probably has enough galvanic corrosion to destroy the head gaskets so checking compression and/or doing a leakdown test isn't a bad idea.
Remember, there are 2 more freeze plugs at the back of the block just above the crankshaft.
I would not suspect those, though, I would go for the hoses towards the back of the block spraying the water. heater hoses, etc. hard to dislodge a freeze plug.........
If you have water out the back underneath, I also would suggest you look to see if yoiu have the factory water/oil cooler next to the oil filter.
Those hoses go unchanged for years until they either start to leak or burst.
I had a 90 Firebird and the same thing happened, pored out the back. Had to get it done fast as it was the wife’s car and had a shop do it. It was the freeze plugs on the rear of the engine.
Thought it was a really strange problem to happen in that location, it always bothered me. They had to pull the engine.
