Default DataMaster 3.5.1 Compatible with 86 Vette?

I can't get Datamaster to communicate with the ECM on my late 86. I'm using an OBD Diagnostics USB cable with the 10k resistor. Any hints / advice?

86 bins are only supposed to support 160 baud diagnostics. This could be your problem.

I've never actually tried datamaster with an 86 bin, so I don't know for sure if it will work at 160 baud or not. I see in your profile that you have an aftermarket chip. This adds another variable.

Can you at least scan at 160 baud with another program like TunerPro or TuneProRT and your present chip and cable? This would help to verify the set-up.

On a related note: Earlier this year, I successfully hacked an 88 4+3 bin to work for 86 4+3 cars, specifically for this purpose (to provide 8192 baud scan capability).

The unique 86 style first gear detection logic had to be added in and also some changes to work with the on/off switch wiring that is unique to 86.

There are some threads in the C4 Tech/Performance area that document some of this activity.

A few guys here are running variations of this bin with good results. Let me know if you're interested.

I haven't tried running DataMaster yet with the bin from you guys, but I know I couldn't get DM to work before. It looks like the wire that carries the higher baudrate is physically missing from the ALDL, so I may not be able to either.

Try WinALDL and see what you get. It's nowhere near as good a program, but it's shareware...

Data is on Pin E.

Datamaster is expecting the data on pin M so the cable adaptor must tie the two pins together in the interface.

Pin M does not need to be populated in the car's ALDL connector.

Thats not the case with my homemade cable. It just wants the data line to come through the correct location in the serial port.

Thanks for posting that schematic.

As long as the data gets to the correct pin on the serial port, that's all that matters.

Only a cable that is intended to work with both the newer and older cars (with support of both pin M and pin E) would require these pins to be tied in parallel.

This is not completely clear in the Datamaster Help file (nor in my previous post).

Still waiting for a report from geezel...

Dan, I know that you have datamaster working now at 8192 baud in your 86, since I've seen the data.

One question that is still unknown to me: Did it ever work at 160 baud with the original 86 bins?

I've never tried an 86 bin with datamaster to know if this will work or not, but this would be easy enough for me to try, I just never thought of trying it before (and my demo version was out of recordings). I'm still curious if this works.

Note: When I've run 86 bins with TunerProRT I only got 160 baud data.

Yes, I have run Datamaster before, but with a Hypertech chip. Not sure wich speed it was at, but may have an old log I can look into.
I'll check into that later.

I can say for a fact that DM does NOT work with my stock 86 bins. Can't get a signal.

Success! I just installed an eprom that Pat (Tequilaboy) was gracious enough to provide and DM works fine. Now for some scanning...
