Default Car is starving for fuel

3 quick questions maybe you guys can help me with.

1. How do you tell if your injectors are bad or clogged?
2. If your fuel pump is going bad does it just go or can it just work chitty before it gives out? Next question,,
3. Wouldn't either of these cause it to throw a code?

I ask because my car is starving for fuel, occasionally. Really weird chit started happening. Car drives fine then it's like it wants to cut out. Pull over rev it a few times and it just goes away. Took it to autozone (I know it's not the best set up in the world but it's a free test) and it's throwing no codes. Now it's happening more often. Not sure what to do. Any suggestions before I take it in?: Car has 38k on the clock.

Is there any chance that you got water in the tank? This would explain the cutting out.

I've run it to almost empty and have fueled it back up to the top two or three times. When I took it out this season my first thought was bad gas. Weird because it just comes and goes.

The reason I asked about the gas is because that is how mine was acting. If you siphon all or most of your gas out you might find some water. The water settles to the bottom and the gas will float. Good luck in finding out what the problem is.

Ok cool, I just saw that you have a 93. You could always pull your fuel rail and then pull the injectors. If you pull the last two you should be able to see if you have water in the lines because it will come pouring out along with gas that is.

I would steer towards ohm'ing the injectors before anything but checking the fuel pressure is easiest. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge you can screw on the schrader valve?

1. You can ohm test the injectors hot and cold to see if the injector coils are in good shape. You can also attach a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve and check the fuel pressure and leak down. Also tape it to the windshield to see if the fuel pressure drops when the problem occurs. One more thing is to pull the fuel rail with the injectors attached and attached to the fuel lines. Turn the key on for 2-3 seconds and turn it off. Watch the injectors and see if you see any leaking. Easy to do on the LT1.

2. It can do either. Sometimes it just goes bad without warning. Other times it will go slowly. Many things it could be..like bad connections, wiring, water, ect.

3. Nothing in the fuel system will cause a code. The only thing I can think of that will cause a code is (code 54 on the L98 cars which is low voltage). I haven't checked in my 92 FSM for a fuel system code although there could be one.

You are making the assumption it’s a fuel starvation problem and that’s OK for starters. Check the fuel pressure and fuel filter. You might even want to pull out the fuel pump and check the sock on the pump to make sure its clean. Then also you can look I the tank with a flashlight.

Those year cars don’t have the problems with the injectors that the earlier years had and hold up really well. I think chances are low the injectors are a problem but checking the resistances on them is a quick check.

The other issue could be electrical related. You never said it ran poor but cuts out so I at this point would put an opti low on the list. An ICM is always a possible consideration but with these kind of weird problems I always think of the ECM. The amount of strange and weird symtoms seem to be getting broader and larger all the time that I hear about for the ECM.
