i just installed a complete new rear dii w/ 3.55's in it last sunday that i bought from ikerds when i had my old one out i noticed it turned pretty easy, the new one was tighter due to the new parts i assume, my question is that shouldthere be any noise at all coming from the rear end or is that normal until it gets broke in. I filled it w/ 1.5 quarts like the shop manual says plus the posi lube its only got 70 miles on it since the install.
What kind of noise are you getting? Did you call "Ikerds" and discuss it and of course their warranty program to verify they stand behind what they sold you?

When I had the Diff changed (a D36 with 3.54) it was noisy only for first 20 or 30 miles. I made as susggested a break-in. After 100 miles it was less nois but much more than the stock one expecially letting off the gas pedal. It was equipped with richmod gears.
The new one (a D44 with 3.45 with youkon gears) is Without noise at all.
fill it untill the oil exit from the hole.... do not put a fixed quantity.

did you do the figure 8's in a parking lot to break in the rear? I installed a rear from ikerds earlier this year and the first thing i did was a series of figure 8's to break it in.
I used 2 containers of posi lube in addition to the higher weight 75-140 weight oil.
I did the figure 8's after install and did some more yesterday. ill check the fliud level. i was just wondering if some noise was normal during break in period.
This Dana 44 is one of the hardest differentials to replace a ring and pinion correctly. Proper tools and knowledge are necessary to do it right. If the teeth are not set properly, you'll hear a whine. Don't know about the Richmond gears but GM or Mopar gears are quiet if installed right.
The figure 8's are used to break in the positraction clutch packs on each side.
To break in the ring and pinion, drive it only a few miles and then let it cool completely before driving again. It is important not to overheat the gear set during break in.
Most shops will set up gear sets a little on the tight side figuring they will wear in and the backlash will increase.
Keep in touch with Ikerds and they will make it right.
