Default Refinishing a Hood

So I just bought a new hood and bumper for my 87 on ebay. I was planning to hopefully refinish it myself over the winter and get the whole car painted in the spring. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to sand it down?

first clean it with some lacquer thinner or acetone. the roughest paper you can use without leaving scratches is 220. Use a catalized primer to prime. Dupont has an excellent basecoat clearcoat that is a dead on match to factory colors. 3 or 4 coats base, sand with 600, wet, 2 to 3 coats clear. looks like glass.

thanks for the help! I actually power washed it today and got most of the top layer of paint off of it. Now that it's off, I'm down to the original factory paint so this is where I'll start

just scuff it up abit with a scotch brite pad or 200 sand paper and the go for it! you may want to sand with 400 paper for a couple clear coats. good luck. it will look good, ive painted like that wi th a rattle can and got good results. you may wnt to practice on some sheet metel first to get the strokes down. go for it!!

Me thinks you should check out the body and paint section in this forum ...You only want to do it once and have it look good
