When I put headers on my 86' I switched to a generic mini starter. It was never right regardless of how I, or the 2 mechanics I took it to, shimmed it.

I finally gave up and put on a 1988 corvette starter (1st year of the factory mini starter) from NAPA. No shimming needed and it worked smoothly (though the hotter it gets the slower it cranks, I need to put a heat shield on the thing). I did have to pull ALL of the slack out of the positive wire and bend the 90-degree angle that attaches to the starter to about 45-degrees to make it fit properly, but I did not have to replace the cable.

I also had to route my cable under everything for every bit of slack and bend the end flat, but mine also fit without additional cable. I keep meaning to add a couple inches for slack, but I never got around to it.

Yeah I hear people have problems with the aftermarket mini starters and i've had enough trouble with the headers and thats why I just bought one for the '88-'91, brand new and yes I have a heat shield wrap to put on it and some for the wires too.

Try Summit Racing www.summitracing.com ,they are in Ohio, close to Akron so delivery generally takes one day.
Jegs is also in Ohio and takes one day for shipping, but they dont carry an OEM replacement. Those Prostarters look pretty sweet though.
