Ok, a while ago I was asking what to do for a few tenths by friday, didn't have time to do everything I wanted, but more fun for next week incuding some of your ideas I guess! I decided to keep the car street ready, and not do anything I have to switch back and forth from.
I went and got the BBK 52mm TB. The finish is kinda harsh, however I still think its best for the money. I didn't get to port anything like the EGR wall, or clean up the new TB a little (next week) just bolted it on the last minute and I then took of the frisbe off. These two mods shaved about 1.5tenths (was my goal though, would have hoped for more though) and got me into the very high 13s!
Strange thing is my MPH now. Even with the worst runs, its consistently higher by 3 to 5 MPH than even my best runs before the frisbe removal and TB?? Any ideas?
Next week I will be porting the plenum and EGR wall and likely get SLP or Edle runners? Which are better? Also is the edlebrock intake worth it, or would gasket matching SLP runners to the stock one be close, and pocket $350?
Last, I'm thinking of everyones favorit mod here it seems, gear, gears and gears. Starting to think mine are low, with all the 14 flat L98 stockers on here. What is the fastest way to check what I have? Someone said to turn the wheel once and see how many times the drive shaft turns? What if your wheel is 18" up from 17? must be another simpler way?
To find out what rear end you have, look under the center console door for the codes. There is a post in here with a link to a site with all the codes. Most are 2.59- I got lucky when I checked my code and saw I had a 3:07. Just right for a daily driver- occasional dragster. Mine did 14.1 without a single mod and 91K miles! Where can yo get a BBK TB, and how much?
The larger TB allows the engine to take in more air. At low rpms it doesn't need and can't use more air. But it boosts the upper rpm range where more air can be used. Therefore, you were able to make more horsepower.
When you turn the wheel one revolution, the rear end doesn't care what size tire is mounted. A revolution is a revolution. However, in order to negate any error the differential may cause, make sure that BOTH wheels make the same one rotation. Tire size, (circumference, roll-out, whatever) WILL effect the overall ratio between the engine and the ground, but not the gears in the rear end. Is this any help?
Thanks guys. I checked the center console, 4 rows of 3 digit codes. On the third row there is a G92 I'm glad someone told me an example of a code to look for, to many to know whats a rear end. Looks like I have a 3.07 than? What is the cost, is it hard on these cars or wothwhile to go higher, like 3.43. or 3.73?
I got the TB from summit. It was under $300. I also got an MSD ignition module, though it was the wrong kind, and they said thats all they carried for our cars?
thanks mackey, but you have a 96, and the runners are supposed to be a big hold up on our L98 cars. Saw some people at thirdgen.org claim up to 3 tenths with just that mod?? that would be great :)
Mackey's sour grapes on the 52s. Big Mack, I love mine without heads/cam ... the roller rockers let more air in ... the 52 is a perfect match to the stock intake. :yesnod:
I also got an MSD ignition module, though it was the wrong kind, and they said thats all they carried for our cars?
Was it the 6AL. If so you can buy a $15 wiring harness that makes it much easier. I believe the part number is 8875. It took me 1 hour to install mine.
Your ET gain is about what I would expect, that 3-5mph increase is likely due in part to weather conditions and/or vehicle weight.
Now that Yyou have increased air flow out of the engine and are working on increasing flow into it you need to consider an AFPR to tune the fuel flow at WOT.
