When I depress the brake pedal on my 86 my idle goes way down and I'm also noticing a hard brake pedal, can I safely assume my booster is shot. I don't hear any vacuum leaks and the line going to the booster checks ok. I seen some metal boosters online for a lot less $$$ than original, what do you guys think. Thanks in advance
Sounds like a booster. I'd just go get a new one from Autozone or the like. Used ones tend to develop the same problems as the one you're taking out. It takes a 13mm, swivel, and about 18" of extension and it's not to bad.
is where I got mine - cheap - and good service - I've been running it for 2 years now - on tracks and autoX's - works great even with bigger brakes!
Some here say it's a PITA to change - really not to bad - you need to pull the drivers seat - 4 nuts - a 5 minute job - that makes it a whole lot easier - that and a set of Wobbler extensions from harbor Freight - 8 bucks for 5 or 6 of em I think - all different sizes - combos of them make reaching the nut hidden partially behind the steering column easy to get to. I did mine in my 86 in about 45 minutes - and there are chimps with tools that are better mechanics than I am!
I installed the metal one with no real problems. If I had to redo it, I'd spray paint it black, first. Just personal preference. I bought it on piratejack.net - a little cheaper than that other site, but it looks like they are all the same mfg.
