I hate this Chilton Manual. It's supposed to cover 1984 thru 1996. Yeah, right.
I just ordered my Helm but it will take a while.
The brake wear indicator just started in on the LT4. I pulled out the Chilton manual and all it says is to "remove the circlip and retainer pin". I do not see that on mine. It looks like there is a bolt on the top that I can take out and then swing the caliper back to change the pads.
Can anyone confirm this for the J55 Calipers? If so can you also give me the torque for reinstalling the bolt? Please don't let it be 160 ft lbs.
If anyone cares I am going to install the NAPA Ceramix. I don't like the look of that black dust on the chrome rims...
The rears on a J55 system are the same as non-J55 brakes... all the J55 option is is 13 inch fronts. The caliper does bolt in the rear, don't have the specs for the torque thou.
There is an error in the 95 and 96 Helms manual. The rear caliper bracket bolt is mistakenly given as the same value as the front. This is not correct and you will damage your rear knuckle if you follow the manual. From memory, the front is 160 ft-lb and the rear should be approximately 70 ft-lb. Please check these values with someone who has an earlier manual, I no longer have mine.
But, DO NOT TIGHTEN the caliper slide pin bolt that high, the previous post has the correct (I believe) torque.
Also, many people do not replace the caliper slide pin bolts with every change, using blue loctite on the threads prevents loosening/loss of the bolt.

Tom, thanks. I probably should have emphasized the brackets more just to avoid any confusion. I know I have posted information on the service manual errors in the past, but many new members may not be aware.
When I first took the bolt out I couldn't get the caliper to move to save my life. After pondering and sipping on a beer for 15 minutes I calmly walked over, released the parking brake and the caliper practically fell forward.
I have one last question and I think I will be able to finish. I bought the ceramix brake pads and they come with no instructions and two shims to keep them from squealing. Where do the shims go? There only seem to be two options, between the inner pad and the piston or between the outer pad and the caliper.
thanks again. I would have never tried this without your help...
My Durastops came with one backing shim (actually a sticker) per caliper, and I think the instructions said to put them between the outer pad and caliper. So that's where I put mine.
