Hey guys! I need so advice before I start the tear down on my engine. I've been searching for the problem why my car has a fouled #4 spark plug (all other plugs are in great shape) and erradically missing during normal driving speeds and stops when I accelerate out of overdrive. It runs fine while in park or in gear at a light or stop sign.
Here are the repairs with no change in results. Installed new dist. cap, rotar,& plug wires. Switched the #4 and #3 fuel injector to see if the #4 injector is leaking. The #3 spark plug never fouled, but the #4 Plug continued to fouled. I also changed the intake and the exhaust valve stem seals on the #4 cyclinder. I also did a cyclinder compression test. All cyclinders averaged 175-180psi. I haven't done a leak down test.
I'm begging to think I have a problem with the piston rings becuse of the fouling, but I'm not sure it's the cause of the missing. Yesterday I noticed that I had some white smoke coming from the tail pipes when I got into it from 45 mph.Two weeks ago I made a pass down the 1/8th mile. The car did fine(on Street tires). No missing! No stubbling! I couldn't see if there was white smoke it was after 9pm. SO What am I miising here ??
I never thought much of a coolant leak. That be the cause of the #4 cyclinder to foul? Well I was anticipating on tearing the engine down. Now I can justify having some porting done to the heads and possiblly a few other things. Thanks for your info!
Why don't you pull # 4 plug, and put some air to it, like 130/145 lbs off a compressor. rotate the engine till the valves are closed and see where the air is going, bubbles in radiator, head gasket, or intake. air rushing out of dipstick, rings. air comong out of valve covers, valve stem seals. air out of exaust or intake, valves. It helps to know what to look for before you tear it down. Might be something as simple as valve stem seals and 6 hrs. work.

That's something I could do right now but, I don't have a compressor, and I'm not sure if a portable air tank would work.
