Default Stuck Lifter

One of my lifters seems to be stuck. The seat where the pushrod sits will not compress the internal springs.

Any recommendations? Replacement I guess.

Thanks

Yes, then I took it out and tried to depress the plunger on the bench with an old push rod. Nothing.

I then took out the mated lifter, and it compresses with a little pressure.

Pull the snap ring and take the lifter apart. Maybe an easy fix ??

Getting a new one from NAPA today. I'll take it apart out of curiosity....

Personally, I would get a whole new set and replace them all.

If one stuck, it may not be long before you're replacing them all.

One by one.

Interesting - I could not compress any of my lifters yesterday - I tried them one by one by putting a pushrod in the seat (lifters in their normal positions) and pressing as hard as I can - zero movement. Does anybody know the specifications of the internal lifter spring?

FYI the engine has not been run for about 10 weeks, so I assume the lifters are bled down...

It is a 17 year-old car.

The car only has 30K miles and the inside of the motor is spotless.

Now, to the real reason......

The wife is giving me a ration of shet because of the money I am spending on the car.

This started off as a Super Ram upgrade with $1000 I had "laying around" that she didn't know about. Now, it's heads, exhaust, cam....

Any little bit I don't spend today, I can do later. Lifter's are not that big a deal.

Got a link? Will they work? Are they any good? Anything I looked at were $400 a set.

Even at $15 each that's $240.

So the #88958689 caddie, ltx, lsx roller lifter will work in an '89 L98 also? Or would the lifter kit #12371042 be a better selection, considering they are so close in price? Which one would work better w/a cam w/.539"/.558" lift? Thanks,

Rich K

I tested a couple today - the movement inside the lifter is visible when I added half a turn of preload. Didnt mean to hijack the thread - thought it may be useful in future to add this info.

If you have a set of roller lifters for $100 that are of decent quality (factory or better) and fit a 1990 L98 I'll take them.

Let me know.

I had two in my hand on the bench.

one would compress, not much but it did compress, with just a little pressure.

The other would not compress no matter how hard I pressed.

Perhaps it's a solid lifter?

Are you sure it isn't still full of oil? If lifters are full I don't think you can push them in by hand. Try standing them up and soaking them overnight in a jar of oil, then see how they act in the morning.

That practice is specifically NOT recommended by every engine parts manufacturer I have ever seen address the subject.
