Never do this. I learned the hard way once. It may work if you are lucky, but I did this and sheared the teeth off of the cam. That was a few years ago and I definitely learned an expensive lesson.
Major suckage. Yeah, I just use a long screwdriver if I can't get my cap to where I want it. I like to have the dist cap harness plug facing to the driver's side. This gives ample adjustment room and makes the cap wire harness accesible so it does not end up facing the firewall.

Didn't sound like a good idea. I rotated the engine slowly by hand with a ratchet on the crank.
The easiest way next time is to push down on the distributor and bump the engine with the starter. It will drop right down. Honest! Later! Frank
i don't push down on the dizzy, just let it's own weight do the work...done literally hundreds, prolly thousands,over 40 years, never had a prob, crank the starter while watching for dizzy drop, most drop in one rev, a few need two revs...20 seconds and done.
btw, if the dizzy just refuses to ''line up'' where you want it when you set the timing, the dizzy gear has an ''odd'' number of teeth (13 IIRC) and you can drive out the retaining pin, rotate the gear 180* on the dizzy shaft, to get ''half a tooth'' relocation.
