Mine is a '91.....I'm getting a Code 23.....the manuals say check the IAT Sensor; check connections, etc. After checking the electricals of the sensor itself, replace if defective. To most, mine is a pretty stupid question; my apologies in advance.
It would seem to me that if the unit is a "sensor" that performs a function; i.e., "sensing" something that is not functioning properly - that part, not the sensor should be repaired. Does the sensor do something besides "sense"? Does it regulate the Intake temperature in some manner?
Re: What does an IAT Sensor do, anyway? (StephensblackL98)
You have a speed-density system, so your computer relies on the Intake Air Temperature sensor more heavily than a mass-air flow system. I'd pull the offending sensor, clean it, and test it in pan of cold water, slowly heating it up. Check the voltage (could be resistance also) during the warm up.......I lent out my TPI books, so I don't have the values, but it voltage or resistances should change and change gradually as you warm the sensor up. I would also check the voltage at the harness, I believe you should have 5 volts and make sure the tension tabs are tight, you can usually take a pic and pry them out a little to get more tension.

Quicker test-IAT and CTS are the same part number. After letting the car sit overnight, the IAT and the CTS should both have the same resistance, since they would both be the same temp if the engine sat overnight. -Matt-
