Default Fan Switch

If I got something like this, would you still need a 160 thermo? Its about $44 at jegs. Part number 771-18905 This should help a lot at the track, for the cool down brakes. Its a bunch of wires, and a switch and control box:

Take control of your electric fans! Perma Cool's adjustable thermostat gives you that control. Kit contains all necessary components for electric fan installation. Thermostat switch is adjustable from 160°F to 210°F and comes preset at 185°F. Instructions for single and dual electric fan installations included.

Well, I need a 160 thermo anyhow for the chip Ed is making, so I guess the question is, do I need the above, it you already have a 160 themo, which the idea behind that is for your fan to kick in sooner?

Mid America sells a fan switch bypass. It is a little switch that you wire right to your fan relays. You can then turn your fans on when you want. I have the switch in my car, and I use it when racing. While waiting in line I turn the fans on. When I am ready to go, I jut flip the switch off and the fans stop.

This switch doesn't effect the normal operation of the fans either. The fan will still automatically come on when the are suppose to.

Swith is like 12 bucks too. Or you could probably go to Radio Shack and get the switch and some wire for less than that.

I'm curious whay one would use a manual swtich if there was a faschip in the car? The fastchip turn the fans on at 180 I believe. If the engine is less than 180, does it really need cooling off any more?

If Ed is programming the fan on/off temps to support a lower stat, you don't need anything else. If you put in a lower stat without changing the fan on/off temps then it won't buy you anything as the radiator needs moving air to cool and in traffic it gets the moving air from the fans. If you turn the fans on at a lower temp without a new lower temp stat, the fans will always run because they won't be able to cool the motor enough to reach the shut off temp.
