Why not just get a GMPP 290 hp crate engine? It cost under 2K and you get a nice warrantee. I would also take apart the engine you have and see exactly what is wrong with it. Drop in the 290 crate and build up the old one in your spare time.

Nice read in the latest issue of Corvette Enthusiast Magazine. Buildup of an L98 to over 400hp. 355 cu in, Heads, cam, intake and more. They claim the car is good for 11's and 30 mpg on the highway Not sure about that but an interesting article. Surely more than 2 grand though.

You can add a bigger cam like a ZZ9 and a new chip and reuse your entire TPI setup. Look at a GMPP site for more info.

If you have time and tools, remove the original and rebuild it. You will spend $$$ at a machine shop but you can put it together with the parts of your choice and it will do what you want. With the price of gasoline I would stay very near stock specs.
