Went to start the car up this morning and she just turns over and over but will not start. I was going to check the codes but my check engine light does not illuminate, it has been working up until now. I turn the key on and the fuel pump does not come on. I can apply 12 volts to pin G on the diagnostic connector and the fuel pump runs fine. I have checked all the fuses in the fuse panel next to passenger door and they are all good. I have checked both battery terminals which appear good and battery turns engine over strong and has 13.3 volts. Is there a hidden fuse for the ECM that I am not seeing or do you think I need to replace the ECM. I would like a few ideas to try before I start throwing parts at it.
Also, I do not have a fuel pressure gauge to test pressure, but after I run the fuel pump from pin G, fuel will spray from the valve on top of the fuel rail when pressed. I also replaced the fuel filter today and it was no help.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ok, lets go through all the standard tests to find out why it won't start! Engines need spark and spark at the right time, fuel, air, and in the correct ratio in order to start and run. You need some basic automotive tools to do some diagnosis. While someone cranks, use your timing light to see if you have spark and spark at the right time. Use a fuel pressure ($10-$12) guage on the shrader valve on the end of the fuel rail, it should be around 40 psi. See how long it takes for the fuel pressure to drop after the ign is off. Rapid drop indicates likely leaky injectors making it too rich to start. Remove the large hose on the MAF and try a start, clogged air filters don't allow enough air. While cranking, spray some starter fluid into the MAF and see if the engine fires. If it does, you likely aren't getting fuel. Use a noid light (available at parts stores) or a low power 12v lamp like a 194 side marker light and unplug an injector and put the lamp across the injector plug and crank the engine. You should see the lamp pulse during cranking. Pull one or more spark plugs and see if they are wet with gas showing that you have leaky injectors. You might also have a cold start injector that is not working which makes it hard to start when it is cold. Last, pull the center of the dash apart and replace the dead SES lamp and then retrieve any error codes. The SES lamp is very very helpful!
