Not sure about the vinyl hardtops from the factory but It wouldn't surprise me at all if they were made by an after market company. I believe '89 was the first year of the OEM hardtops. However, the OEM hardtops will fit all C4 convertibles.....even '86-'88. Hardware for the '86-'88 would have to have been purchased after '89 I suspect.
Did "Smoothline", the company that is making hardtops for C4's today, make the factory hardtops originally?
Just wondering.
No. the factory tops were made by American Sunroof Company which was located a short distance from the Assembly Plant. Convertibles that were ordered with the optional hardtops were driven there and the hardtop was painted to match the car and installed.
The hardtop sometimes required that the door glass be adjusted so that the fit of the window against the hardtop weatherstripping and the convertible top weatherstripping was the same. This was done at ASC.
Once the top was installed, the car was returned to the plant for shipping.
Did the C4 hardtops ever come with vinyl? Will a 1987 hardtop fit a 1992? Thanks, Ron
the factory (OEM) hardtops did not come in vinyl covered. All of them were painted to match the car. The 87 will fit the 92 but you must get a retrofit kit including some brackets for the header bar.
