Default hot start problem

Hi All, I Have A 90 Automatic. The Problem: After I'm Driving The Car A While And The Engine Heats Up It Won't Start After Turning It Off. If I Wait Bout 1/2 Hour The Car Starts Fine. When I Try To Start It Everything Comes On Fine When I Turn The Key To The On Position, But When I Crank It ,it Does Nothing, No Clicks Nothing. All Guages Work It Just Won't Turn Over. Any Ideas.

Ben

If power is making it to the small terminal on starter solenoid and all battery and starter connections are clean and tight, I would say the heat has taken it's toll on starter and/or solenoid.

Could be a failing start Solenoid or start itself, It maybe getting heat soaked and when hot, will either expand and not let the start turn over or the solinoid is will not make contact or operate.

Other possible problem is the wires, check to see if any of them are melted, cracked, discolored..

I had somewhat of the same problem with my Van.. Jumping the term will crank it over. so I replaced the solinoid and have not had a problem since. (lucky it is raised 6" and I am able to get under it without a problem and jump the two term with a screwdriver)

Pull the console cover so you can get to the gear selector switch at the base of the gear shift. Unplug the gear selector switch when it won't start and jump the wiring harness plug and try a crank. If it cranks and starts you have a defective gear selector switch. If no crank, measure the voltage on the jumper, it should be 12v in crank position, if not, you have a VATS problem. If 12v and no crank, you have a starter problem. You can jump 12v to the jumper and the starter should crank. If its VATS, let us know for further diagnosis.

A '90 car (non ZR1) I believe the first thing I would do after confirming voltage and that the connections to starter and battery are clean and sound would be to replace the "start enable" relay. It's fairly inexpensive and easily located up under the hush panel on the drivers side.

Here's a recent thread with some discussion and location of the relay. It's likely the least expensive fix if it's the culprit and if your "no start" is regular you'll now quite soon if it's the fix. The part is maybe $14 - $20 depending on brand and source.

Common SBC problem, the fact that it cranks fine when cooler confirms this.
Can buy a wrap around heat shield which may go some way to solving your problem
