Default Gear drive...

I love the sound of a gear drive timing set. Can you put one on an engine wiht a knock-sensor (like an 84 vette) without any issues?

Probably not. Try it and let other like minded people know. Personally, given the choice, I'd rather surprise people with MORE performance than they expected, not less. Speak softly and carry...

RACE ON!!!

LOL! True, Ive got a "sleeper" for that kind of fun though, I really want to cause a scene at stoplights! lol... I called Jegs and apparently you can but you have to get a knock sensor that is less sensitive. None are made application specific from what he said, but they "must be out there."

I've been told by several cam manufacturers that this is not possible. If you wanna try it though more power to ya. Tell us how it turns out.

They don't "dampin" the valve train harmonics like a fiber-gear and chain either.

I had one a long time ago that came on a short block I picked up. I looked around and I remember some people were getting them to work on their cars using like a pvc standoff to put the knock sensor out of the block and desensitize it.

I never used it, never intended to, and I just sold it to somebody with an old camaro. But when I did search before buying the motor that is all I found.

Pete Jackson sells 2 versions of their gear drives. One is a "quiet" gear drive. I have used this one on a car with a knock sensor (IROC Z) and had no issues. The only problem is that you really do not hear it like you do the normal one so it defeats your purpose. You can tell it is there BUT not loud at all. If you are going to use this as a daily driver and put alot of miles on it I would advise against it. The IROC we did was a daily driver and the gear drives (replaced 2 in 50K miles) did not hold up long term like a good chain.

Just my 2 cents

Those cheap "dual idler" Gear Drives are good for 4 things.

1. Putting metal in the oil.
2. Making your oil temature higher.
3. Causing harmonic problems in the valve train.
4. Eating HP (there is alot of friction in all those gears).

Anyone who has ever actually put one on a motor (or removed one) also knows how much clearance there is in between the gears also, yet the manafactures claim more accurate cam timing? I never figured that one out...

If you want something trick buy a belt drive. Otherwise buy the best true roller timing chain you can afford.

Thanks for the technical advise. To be honest (and mildly ashamed) I had not really considered much more than I like the sound, and would it work. I ma glad to hear you guys chime in and help me to see the other perspective. Thanks again!
