Saturday I was down getting my oil changed and when i went to pop the hood open only one side opened. I went back to the house and I can't find anything in my repair manuels concerning this. Can anyone give me some ideas where to look and what to do?
There are 2 seperate cables on my 89 Vette for the hood.
1 cable controlls the passenger side, the other controlls the drivers side.
I think the cables are connected to each other at the latch. Take a look at the latch , maybe 1 of the cables broke.
Currently I can only pop the drivers side with the latch, for the passenger side, I have to use plyers to pull the cable. The end of the cable is broken that fits into the latch.
Replacing this cable is another one of my winter projects.
in my case the stamped, spring steel (?) clip that holds the cable end to the lever arm (at the latch) broke off for the passenger side.
i had to remove the inner fender, then with a "custom modified" flat blade screw driver i was able to release the latch.
the available "hood release tools" didn't/couldn't do it for me.
the screw driver tip was bent 90 deg then about 2 1/2"-3" up the shaft another 45 deg bend. this allowed me to reach over the edge of the latch and get down in to grab the lever. i could get my hand to the front edge of the latch housing but the lever was out of reach of my fingers so i had to make the tool.
it wasn't easy and more than a few expletives were used in the process!
Same thing happened to me a couple summers ago. I was driving in city traffic when I noticed my temp guage was toping 230!! I stoped as soon as I could and could hear that my coolant fan wasn't on so I went to pop the hood and bypass the coolant relay --cable popped. Lucky for me a buddy was following and he had a pair of pliers. I was able to get under the dash and pull on the cable. It had broken right at the hood release. Hope that you have the same luck!! Changing the cable wasn't much fun either! (about $45.00 from Mid America)
Thanks guys, I am fixing to go out and look for mine now. I couldn't find anything in my Haynes or Chiltons books. I do appreciate the help, I am hoping I can do this without taking it to my local Chevrolet mechanics.
