I have a 1996 CE coupe, purchased a fobe from a member, couldnt get it to engage, bf did some trouble shooting, and found that my PKE light in dash is not coming on. Am wondering the best route to figure out if it has been disconnected, bad wiring, etc.. I never noticed that it wasnt coming on until now. Have only had the car since Sept, not sure where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Laura
There is of course the possibility of bad PKE lamp. The DIP can be removed and the lamp checked. A loose connector at the PKE receiver is unlikely. The PKE lamp should light for 2 seconds which is part of a selftest. Most likely if the lamp does not light the PKE receiver is defective which lives in the middle of the dash.
You can check some inputs at the PKE connector but that requires the top of the dash pad to be removed and a FSM would be needed also. The other common problem with programming is a switch in the column (with key in and out), but don’t think that is related to your problem at this time.
If the lamp is not bad, you probably are going to need to replace the receiver which is a common cure for you symptom. The dash pad has to come out for that to.
It could be a whole lot of things. There is a huge diagnostic procedure in the Factory Service Manual for this. Since you have only just gotten the car, now is the correct time for you to get an FSM. It will answer your question and so many others you will have about the car throughout your ownership. A company called Helms makes them for GM and sells the complete ones brand new for about $120 (please don't get the misleading "preliminary ones" on ebay - they have bigger print and approx. 1/2 the information). It is far and away the best purchase you will make for you car and could potentially save you thousands of dollars and countless hours of time and mistakes.
I bought the full service manuals after I first bought the car, the good ones, and have been reading through the diagnostics, but beings it is so complicated to detect, just thought perhaps there was an easier way to figure out where the problem was.
It very well may in the reflector, or the pke antenna, as when I purchased the car, evidently some of the wiring in the rear was a mess, and the guy told me he removed some things, but not sure if that was one of them.
Guess if we cant find it, may have to take it in to have it figured out.
Thanks for all the info,
Laura
Since this thread was here already I thought I would piggyback onto it with another question. I have 3 fobs now for my 95 (the 2 that came with the car and a third I bought since the first 2 broke--plastic housings). These all still work with the car and I understand from the FSM that the computer will program up to 3 fobs.
So what happens if I want to get a 4th fob? The FSM does not state how to un-program one fob to allow another to be programmed. So if I get a 4th fob, will it be essentially useless?
By the way, the electronics of these fobs are just fine. The problem is with the crappy plastic cases that keep breaking. It's too bad that you aren't able to just buy a new case and transplant the innards.

Just pick the 3 you want to use & reprogram them with the programming instructions.

My impression was that the computer would not offer the opportunity to program since it "knows" that three are already programmed and I am not aware of a way to "flush" this information from the computer (unhooking the battery reportedly does not erase the programs). Are you saying that this is not really the case?

Just go thru the reprogramming procedure that will flush the old codes, etc. Once you reprogram the fob's they will be using new codes. I assume you have the FSM, just follow the instructions & all will be well.
Make sure the other fob's are far enough from the car as you bring each in for the programming.
Disconnecting the battery will not effect the pke codes if I'm reading the manual correctly.
