You don't have to remove the breadbox on a 88. Maybe yours 90 is different. I dropped the plastic panel under the dash to reach the chip. Changed mine twice. It's no big deal.

If your're adding a "performance" chip with a "bone stock" motor, it really won't do much for you unless you want the fans to come on sooner.
But to answer your question, remove the "hush panel" that is under the passenger side dash. There should be 3 screws at the front and one at the rear. The interior light has a harness connector that needs to be undone but be careful, the little clips are prone to breaking.
Look upwards towards the front of the car and the ECM is the aluminum box.
You dont take out the ECM that way, it comes out from underneath as c4cruiser says.
When you remove the hush panel, the ECM is mounted on its side, and slides directly down once you remove the two bolts holding it in place. GENTLY tug on the wiring harness to get it to slide down. I think its an 11mm bolt, and you'll need a wratchet and two extensions.
WRONG!!!! does any body on here know what they are alking about? Thier is no "silver box" Can any onw who has actually done this for a 1985 Corvette help me out? The one thing i have learned other years were not built like this.
There is no need to be rude, you are lucky someone doesnt tell you where to get off. Just calm down and be patient somone will chime in sooner or later. Until then try to consult someone else via internet surfing, and I will try too for you and chime in when I find the answer
Ok sorry to be a D**k but ie was not on the side it was against the back of the dash, and it was not silver it was black. So i am sorry I was very frustrated and i am a big guy (6' about 280) so it is not exactly easy to fit under my dash, so thanks for all the advice and i did not mean to come off like a jerk
Ydes i pt in a perforance chip and WOW! i can tell a huge diffrence and yes it did change my shift points and added a ton of tourqe.
BTW went to the cavelcade of customs in Cincy today and 1 c4 and it was a frankenstein race car (it actually had a fan from a TANK) They cut the top off of it and hooked this fan up to a snow mobile engine, it blows straight up and creates 1000 lbs a down force! very cool
