My 89 has a funny smell when its running. Okay, smell usually is either burning oil or cat. converter issue, right? Well, this smells different. Kind of like an accelerant burning. The car smokes some when you first crank it, but its barely noticable with the eyes and it appears more black than blue or white. Also, at first fire it is usually pretty tough to keep it running well. Runs real rough for a few minutes and maybe even dies a time or two before it keeps running. Once the engine gets warmer, the idle goes up and it begins to run pretty smooth. However, even after you take a drive and then stop and get out while its running the funny smell is still there.
Any ideas? Could it be running rich or does this sound like something more serious?
first thing to start with is cleaning your TB and IAC valve, that should help with your idling problems. second, black smoke is usually carbon build up, my questions to that would be what octain fuel do you run? has the exhaust ever been changed? have you pulled the spark plugs and looked at them, they can tell you alot about how you engine is running.
It could possibly all be related to a dirty TB and IAC so I would go ahead and clean those and get back to us here on the forums, good luck
Thanks. A friend and I are going to clean and rebuild the TB this weekend. Also, check the timing. Flowmaser muffs have been added to the exhaust, but I doubt the whole exhaust has been changed out. There is a small hole in the exhaust on the passenger side before the muff. Also, I'm not sure what octane has been run in the car. I just got it trucked in and it had 3/4 tank when I got it. I have not added any more fuel yet or any additives. Hopefully, some TLC will help me out with this issue.
