got my car tuned for 350 at RPM tune in garner. Did a great job. started at 265 hp and ended with 279.7 and started with 303 torqe and ended with 306. changed my spedo due to my 4.11's and turned my fans (both) both on at 25 degrees cooler. But my car got to 211 at a light then the light turned green so i dont know what it could of gotten to. Does this sound right? It cruises at 201 in 5th gear. I have muff elims. intake and 4.11's nothing else. Should they have turned them on at like 170-190? I didnt ask for 25 degrees cooler. I want like ALOT cooler. What do you guys think? the guys said those are pretty decent numbers.
have you checked your thermostat? my 90' runs at about 165 all day, unless I just run the **** out of it and then it might get to 190. Getting to 211 sitting at a light and normal OT of 201, something doesn't sound right.
how do I check my thermo? even if I have a tune will it get up that hott? I usually put my ac on to keep it down but I thought with a tune, the fans will keep it down. Why couldnt they have put them to like 170?
personally I'd just go ahead and replace your thermostat, you should be able to pick up a 160 or 180 degree from your local parts store for ten bucks or less, remember to get a gasket too.
If memory serves me right most C4's came with something like a 210 or 220 thermostat( but don't quote me on that one). As thermostats age they can begin to fail, sticking in partially or fully closed position, then you get an over-heating engine.
I personally went with a 160 degree hypertech thermostat, it cost a little extra but it's designed to fail in the open position.
You dont want your fans coming on at 170...As said above if your fans are coming on at Im guessing 190, 200? throw a cooler 'stat in it.
Fans will turn on when programmed but that doesnt guarantee your car wont run above those temps. However if your radiator fins are clean and all else is in good order it will run noticeably cooler overall unless youre stuck in traffic. Then it will creep up a bit as all Vettes do.

Your temps sound just fine. You DON'T want it a lot cooler. It the engine runs too cool it increases the wear on the engine and also it will take too long to boil the contaminants out of the oil, further accelerating engine wear. A fan with too cool on/off temps runs excessively wasting gas and fan life. A too cool thermostat will exacerbate those conditions. A 1990 that runs at 165° all day is asking for trouble. It is fine to artificially over cool it for the track, but too cool is no good for regular, street use.
yeah thanks for the advice I just wanted to know fi they put the fans on at 25 cooler that they would come on a cool. Not rise higher. I will check my thermo as I bought a 185 from autozone last month and havent gotten to put it in. it says i have to empty a gallon of coolant, how do I go about doing that? then take off my water neck and its underthat? I have the manual but I wanna make sure I do it right
You can do that (drain it), but I won't lie, I just popped mine off and put a pan underneath to catch the coolant. It was messy but a little blast of air and a rag and it looked just like before. Again, probably not the cleanest "best" way to do it, but I had no problems doing it that way.
so after u drained it a little bit u popped the water neck off and it was under it? and then took it off and replaced it? the thermo I have has a rubber seal on the top of it. Do I need another one?
I have both my LT1's programmed to have the fans come on at 200 and off at 185. Also have Hypertech 160 degree thermos in them. I live in hot Houston and they never go higher than 200. Thermostats should have come with new o rings type gaskets.
Sounds good. I went the mail order route. With the 94 them temp was 194 driving then the fans went on at 230. Had A pcmforless do a pcm for it then 194 cruising and fans went on at 210.
My 96 Lt4 is 194 cruising and fans come on at 230 I think never had them on yet that will change in the summer in lasvegas. There some great performance shops out by the lasVegas speedway might investigate them.

1. Drain and save the coolant don't just let run all over your motor. Put back in what you drained out.
2. Just because a fan comes on doesn't mean your temp won't still go up some. It depends on the situation.
3. I doubt a new thermostat will any difference once you warm all the way up.
4. Follow the manual on procedure. not some goofy advice on here.
