I bought the autometer prolite. Go to autometers website and you'll see it there. I like it because it is small and you can easily change out the rpm pills.

Go here: http://harlan.sketchy.net/store/store.html , he has a rpm shift light that doesn't need 'pills'. It also increments in 100rpm steps.

.... but am not sure what the benfits are?
Well, the light allows you to keep your focus in front of the car, intead of watching the tach. Also you can set the light to come on a couple hundred RPM before your most beneficial shiftpoint. By the time the light comes on, you react, and shift the car, you will be right on. :)

I had my harlan hooked up with an electrical clip. I only use it when at the track, when I am not racing a unhook it and leave it in the glove box.

Have the Harlan shift light mounted in the A/C vent. Has worked great with no problems the past year.

Dean, what wire did you get the tach signal from?

BTW, we are going out to the Motorplex Saturday if the weather cooperates.

gonzo.. I had it when I had a 6 speed Camaro.. when I sold the Camaro, & bought the Vette I didn't need the shift light as the Vette is automatic, and I just set the shift points with my Hypertech...
If I still had a 6 speed car I'd have a shift light in it... Like Scorp says.. just set it 200 rpm less than you want to shift at, & by the time u see the light & react you are shifting right on the money..

Cam-
Hooked my shift light to the turn signal wire. The shift light blinks with the turn signal but is no big deal. New exhaust is being installed this weekend so I will not make the test and tune.

Hey John thanks for the response, makes sense as usual.

another question, I looked at the light and the install, How tough is it to do, considering that I'm not a mechanic. Can a somewhat mechanicalinclined person with somewhat limited tools do this or would I be ceating a horror, i.e my dash in pieces and wires running everywhere. I do have a very good mechanic I trust complety with my car, honest and bright.

Try it or let an expert do it.

Gonzo, I shift by ear(really!) The way I see it, you still have to react to the light. When I hear the engine, I know exactly when to shift. That's just me, doesn't make it wrong for someone else.

Cool tip, thanks for the link! I like the hidden aspect of it. One question, I have seen it mentioned several times about the factory tachs not reading accurate. I see that this shift light splices off the tach signal on the firewall, so does it suffer the same inaccurate issue or is the root of the problem in the tach itself? Also, when people say the tach is inaccurate, what are we talking about here? 5%? 10% off?

Thanks,
Jeff
